On April 9, 2019, Mary Doran, manager of Starbucks, died of cancer at the age of 60. Prince of Peace Catholic Church held a Mass and buried Mary Doran at Evans Funeral Home on April 12.
Mary worked the morning shifts at Grizzly Dining’s Starbucks.
“We started working together at the same time, so she was always so caring and nurturing toward everyone,” said Amanda Freire, a morning shift barista. “Anyone could talk to her, and she would always support them.”
“She was like a mom to everyone and she really looked out for us. She was going through a tough time, so we looked out for each other. It was mutual,” Freire said.
Mary not only helped those during tough times, but she also helped others achieve their goals.
“She recognized my desire to have a leadership position,” supervisor Kaitlin Thompson said. “She worked with me so that I could become a supervisor after three months.”
“Mary inspired me to start my own non-profit for others suffering from cancer. My goal for the future is to help other people, like Mary, in her memory,” Thompson said.
Mary was working in spite of having cancer, but she never complained and made a point to do her best every day.
“We would make sure she didn’t work too hard, take breaks whenever it got too tiring, and make sure she was not hungry or thirsty,” Freire said.
Mary’s strength was felt by everyone she interacted with, and she will be in everyone’s thoughts and prayers. She inspired so many individuals that Starbucks employees have decided to honor her memory.
On April 20, a planter’s box or a Starbucks box will be dedicated to Mary, so students and faculty will always have something to remember her by. All of the employees will be in attendance for the planting of the seeds and flowers, and the box will then be available for the public to admire. The box will be maintained by Mary’s coworkers.
