LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The first athletic event of Georgia Gwinnett College’s 2019 athletic season is scheduled to take place Thursday, Jan. 31, when the NAIA top-ranked and five-time national championship men’s tennis team hosts NCAA Division II No. 5-ranked Lander University (S.C.) at the GGC Tennis Facility, starting at 2:30 p.m.
The Grizzlies won last year’s matchup, sweeping Lander 9-0 in February of 2018.
GGC has won its last 82 matches, the longest active winning streak in intercollegiate athletics.
The men’s tennis program added more hardware last fall as junior Federico Herrera Duran captured the NAIA singles title at the ITA Oracle Cup. Senior Ayed Zatar and sophomoreValentino Caratini teamed to capture the NAIA doubles championship as well as the ITA Oracle Cup Super Bowl title.
Admission to all home matches are free and open to the public.
Meet the Coaches
Georgia Gwinnett College: Chase Hodges is in his seventh season leading the Grizzlies. He has compiled a 124-3 record and five NAIA national championships with the men’s tennis program. Overall, he has posted a 322-63 record in 17 seasons as a men’s tennis head coach. Hodges also serves as the women’s tennis head coach, leading the Grizzlies to four national titles.
Lander: Brett Simpson is in his 14th season leading the Bearcats’ men’s tennis program, having a 226-72 record. He started the college’s women’s tennis program in 2007. Simpson also spent eight seasons as the head coach at Anderson University (S.C.).
No.1 Preseason Ranking
Georgia Gwinnett College men’s tennis was a unanimous choice atop the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll – the 38th consecutive poll that the Grizzlies have been ranked No. 1 by the nationwide panel of coaches.
The Grizzlies bring a 82-match winning streak into the 2019 season. This is the longest active winning streak in all of intercollegiate sports. GGC has posted three consecutive undefeated dual match seasons.
Home Sweet Home
GGC is scheduled to host 17 matches at the GGC Tennis Facility this spring. The Grizzlies will play their first eight matches at home.
Scouting the Bearcats
Lander is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II Top 25 preseason poll. The team is coming off a 22-4 record last spring and a trip to the Round of 16 in the national tournament. Lander went 6-0 in away matches during the 2018 season.
GGC leads 5-0, with the Grizzlies winning 9-0 on Feb. 9, 2018, at Lander. The Grizzlies have won both prior meetings played in Lawrenceville, by 7-2 and 6-3 scores during the 2015 and 2017 seasons, respectively.
